Dislocation nucleation and work hardening in anti-plane constrained shear

چکیده
The paper aims at studying the dislocation nucleation, the corresponding work hardening and the influence of resistance to the dislocation motion within the framework of continuum theory of dislocations. We consider an anti-plane constrained shear problem which admits an analytical solution. The interesting features of this solution are the energy and dissipation thresholds for dislocation nucleation, the Bauschinger translational work hardening, and the size effect.

Micro-plasticity of surface steps under adhesive contact: Part II – Multiple-dislocation mediated contact hardening
The study of the micro-plastic behavior of rough surface contact is the critical link towards a fundamental understanding of contact, friction, adhesion, and surface failures at small length scales. In the companion paper (Yu et al., J. Mech. Phys. Solids 55, 489-516, 2007), we have studied the onset of surface yielding due to single-dislocation nucleation from a stepped surface under adhesive ...

An exactly solvable phase-field theory of dislocation dynamics, strain hardening and hysteresis in ductile single crystals is developed. The theory accounts for: an arbitrary number and arrangement of dislocation lines over a slip plane; the long-range elastic interactions between dislocation lines; the core structure of the dislocations resulting from a piecewise quadratic Peierls potential; t...

متن کاملEstimates from atomic models of tension-shear coupling in dislocation nucleation from a crack tip
The normal stress distribution across a slip plane has the effect of reducing the critical loading required for dislocation emission from a crack tip. The reduction by normal stresses was found to be very significant for Si, based on properties estimated for it using density functional theory, to be large for Fe as modeled by the embedded atom method (EAM), and to be smaller in AI, Ni and order...

DISLOCATION nucleation from a stressed crack tip is analyzed based on the Peierls concept. A periodic relation between shear stress and atomic shear displacement is assumed to hold along the most highly stressed slip plane emanating from a crack tip. This allows some small slip displacement to occur near the tip in response to small applied loading and, with increase in loading, the incipient d...
